SunLit Day of Defeat Map Pack #18 Posted By Pvt_John -
Our 18th DoD Map Pack is now available for download. Click the link above to get either the entire map pack, or any individual maps you map be missing.

Dod_depot56 is a very nice map based around a train yard. dod_reprisal is a remake of a map I remember playing in DoD 3.1.

There are some interesting new maps. Including dod_lennon_b1, a new map that will be in CAL, and which was already loaded for auto-download on the Annex the other day.

There are a couple of fun, offbeat maps in this map pack, too. Dod_ratten1 is a "rats" type map for DoD. Dod_knifefest3 is, as you might expect, a knife fest. Knives only, three three-man caps.

DoD_wolfie is a remake of a Return to Castle Wolfenstein map. It is a massive beach map. We shall have to see what people's framerates are like on this one. It is very pretty, though, and there is actually some cover for the people on the beach to hide behind and use to advance.

There is also a new version of jocund, dod_jocund2, where the map author has swapped around the Axis and Allie spawns and made other improvements.

HL2DM Server Changes Posted By RosietheRiveter -
Some changes for the HL2DM servers:
* both servers now 12 man + 1 reserve slot
Smaller number of slots will allow a greater number and variety of lag free maps.
The one reserve slot is mandatory for the implementation of the mani mod redirect plugin.
That means is if you try to connect to either server when they are full, you will automatically be rerouted and connect to the other.
* added the final versions of Bounce and Swamplight to both servers.
* new map cycles for both servers
* uploaded the new map dm_abyss to both servers

Next week the new stock maps dm_underpass, dm_resistance and dm_powerhouse will be released.
I will add then to both servers' mapcycles with all speed.
Good gaming.

HL2DM New Stock Maps Posted By RosietheRiveter -
Source
Next week we'll be releasing the three HL2DM map contest winners on Steam. The winners of the contest along with some images of the maps were first mentioned here. Also next week, we'll have a small sneak peak for you of the upcoming Half-Life 2 episode "Aftermath".

On Tuesday we began running an updated version of our hardware survey. So far, we've had over 600,000 unique responses. You can see the current results here. Running surveys like this are extremely useful for us as developers, as it helps us to understand what kinds of technology decisions we can make as we continue to invest in the Source engine. It should also be useful for MOD developers to get an idea of what their audience looks like.

SunLit Annex - New Format Posted By RosietheRiveter -
There has been a lot of input lately from players and enforcers on ideas to make the servers better for both the new and clan players. The hoped for result would be a more fair, relaxed and fun atmosphere and to fill a second DOD server.
Fair enough. We'll test out your suggestions on the Annex.
* FF OFF
* weapon limits relaxed
* stock and league maps

The new map cycle can be seen here. The custom maps will autodownload.

UPDATE: The poll on this topic is now on the home page. Vote now to show your preference.

VAC2 on the Horizon Posted By RosietheRiveter -
Friday, March 25 2005

Next week we'll begin beta testing the new Valve Anti-Cheat system. For people playing multiplayer games, there will not be any visible difference while we're conducting the beta, but we will be logging cheating violations into our database to make sure it's ready for general release. This will be the last public notice before the system is released and active for everyone.

If you have any cheats for multiplayer games installed on your computer, now would be a good time to uninstall and stop using them. When a cheat infraction is detected, the offender will be permanently banned from playing on secure servers.

In lighter news, work is progressing on Lost Coast, that is the level we've built to showcase a new piece of rendering technology coming to Source called High Dynamic Range lighting.

SunLit DoD Map Pack #17 Posted By Pvt_John -
SunLit Day of Defeat Map Pack #17 is now available for download.

Click the link above to see screenshots from all the maps, and to download the entire pack or any individual maps you may be missing.

Some of us in the forums were recently lamenting the lack of quality DoD maps coming out -- we speculated the mappers are all waiting for DoD:Source. There are four high-quality, all-new maps included in this map pack, so I guess the custom maps pipeline for DoD has not dried up quite yet.

The four all-new maps are dod_bayeux_b1, dod_prome_b2, dod_nordwind_b3, and dod_propaganda. Dod_bayeux_b1 is a beautiful and large map with 7 flags (all of them single-man). Dod_nordwind_b2 is a very good size map (about the size of Sturm), with 5 flags and a 2-man cap in the middle. It is very nice to look at -- you can even see paratroopers dropping from the sky in the distance.

There are also some remakes of older maps that look enticing. There's a new version of dod_tiger -- dod_tiger2 -- that is essentially the same but all the stick spots are gone. There's a new version of edge as well, dod_edge2.

Some of our members made suggestions for maps that should be added. You can blame Cranium for dod_propaganda, and Bull for dod_casablanca :) Someone else suggested dod_stadtkampf, but I have forgotten who.

The new maps will be loaded on Futurama in a new mapcycle sometime tonight. Get them now so your fragging will be uninterrupted when that happens. Happy fragging :)

SunLit Home Page Optimized Posted By Pvt_John -
Notice the SunLit home page loading any faster this morning?

Something I have wanted to do ever since we put the new site together, but never had the technical ability to do, was to cache the live game server status information in the "Now Playing" box at the right. Thanks to our friend and founder of SunLit, Lazarus Long, it's now up and running!

Previously, whenever anyone came to the home page some javascript code first polled each and every server, then displayed the data. Thus there was sometimes a long delay before the web page was displayed while the web server waited for the game server to respond.

If you had the (far superior) Mozilla Firefox web browser, you would see the the entire web page except the Now Playing box to load, then the Now Playing box would fill in as the game servers responded with information. However, if you are one of the many with MS Internet Explorer (ick!), your web browser would wait for all the data on the page to be ready before the page was displayed. So you would have seen a blank screen for quite a few seconds before the home page was displayed.

Now that Laz has fixed it up so the live game server data is cached, it is read out of the cache on the web server whenever someone comes to our home page. You should notice the web page displays much faster.

The data in the Now Playing box is cached once every minute. If you'd like a real-time view of a particular game server, and to see who's playing, simply click the map thumbnail for that server and you will get the phpUA live server status page.

Happy browsing :) And thanks, Laz!

We now have PsychoStats 2! Posted By Pvt_John -
Many of you have probably noticed we've had no stats available for any of our Source Engine games (HL2DM, HL2 Team DM, and CS:S). The reason was that the old version of Psychostats that we were using (ver. 1.x) did not support the new Source-based games.

Installing PscyhoStats 2, however, looked like an incredible pain. Well, it was an incredible pain, afterall. But at least it's done :)

I must admit, though, that it was worth it. The new stats are beautiful and offer some great new features, which we'll be going into more detail about later.

You can check out your stats in the new system by clicking the "Game Stats" link on the main menu at left, which will take you to the Game Stats main menu page. Direct links to the various stats pages are below.

Note that the fancy "Weapon Hitbox" graphic at the top of each player stat page is not yet active, and so does not show any hitbox data at this time. Source games are not supported for this feature, and SunLit has not yet implemented the game server-side changes necessary to show this data for Day of Defeat. Also, PS 2.x does not support Half-Life 1 DeathMatch, so we are using the old system for that page.

Stats Pages Links:

- Day of Defeat Stats

- Half-Life 2 DeathMatch Stats

- Half-Life 2 Team DeathMatch Stats

- Counter-Strike: Source Stats

- Half-Life 1 Deathmatch Stats

SunLit CS:S Custom Map Pack #1 Posted By Pvt_John -
We have our very first custom map pack ready for the SunLit Counter-Strike:Source server. You can see thumbnail and full-size pictures of all the maps, and download individual maps or the map pack, from the SunLit CS:S Map Pack #1 page.

There is a new mapcycle on the SunLit CS:S server. You can see the mapcycle on the CS:S mapcycle page. We've set it up more or less alternating two standard maps, then a custom, then two standard maps, etc.

We have {TooN} Marvin to thank for the maps. He did the hard work of hunting down the maps and picking out the good ones. Additionally, Marvin is helping us fine-tune the CS:S server to better serve CS:S players, while still maintaining the unique things that make it SunLit. If you're a CS:S player, come check it out and offer suggestions for improvement in the forums.

If you're a DoD junkie who has yet to try CS:S, now is a good chance. These custom maps show what is possible in the custom mapping world with the Source Engine and should therefore be a good indicator in what the early DoD:S maps will look like.

Enjoy!

New Plugin on Source-based Servers Posted By Pvt_John -
We have installed a new plugin on the Source-based servers at SunLit. The games we have currently running that are based on Source include both HL2DM servers (SunLit Team DeathMatch and SunLit Source of Horrors) and the SunLit CS:S server. The plugin, if anyone is curious, is called the Mani Admin Plugin.

The Mani plugin makes life easier for the admins, but also gives players a few of the features they're used to on our HLDS (i.e., Half-Life 1 based) game servers.

Here are some things you can try out on the Source servers:

  • nextmap - shows the next map in the mapcycle.
  • listmaps - shows available maps on the server.
  • thetime - shows current time
  • timeleft - shows timeleft on this map
  • votemap - starts map vote, press esc to see list
  • ff - shows friendly fire status
  • rank - shows your stats ranking
  • statsme - shows your stats
  • top - shows top player stats

Please note that I have not had a chance to try all these things out yet, so don't be surprised if you find a few bugs. The plugin is also a beta plugin, so we may find some unexpected behaviour. Please post something in the forums if you find a problem.

The voting system is also very rudimentary at this point. There is no automatic, end-of-round vote. And there's no "extend map" vote either. The developer says he's working on improving the voting for the next release.

Try it out, and let us know what you think.

HL2 and HL2:DM Update Posted By RosietheRiveter -
**UPDATE** 2/19/05
Servers have been updated and rebooted.
The maps Steamlab, Overwatch and Lockdown have been included on each server's cycle to showcase the new weapons and lighting.
So what do you think ?

Its live and on time.
The promised Source updates are under way.
For HL2:DM that means the Crowbar, StunStick, Slam and a new stock map Steamlabs.

The HL2:DM servers will need to be updated and rebooted for the changes to take effect.

New Mapcycle for Futurama Posted By Pvt_John -
There is a new mapcycle on Futurama. To compliment the mapcycle on Annex, which is rich in custom maps, I thought we'd try a mapcycle on Futurama heavy in standard maps.

There are a few choice customs sprinkled in, too. I tried to pick a custom map that would appeal to the taste of people who may have joined for the previous two standard maps.

Here is the list:

dod_sturm
dod_carentan
dod_switch
dod_sampol3

Change in Server Cfg Posted By RosietheRiveter -
The Team Death Match server gets a real work out but the rounds seem to end just when the action gets hottest. The frag limit has been upped to 90.

This cycle's custom maps seem to be playing better, with better frame rates. Just for today, The Source of Horrors maxplayers is upped to 14. Lets see how the server handles. If lag becomes an issue , we'll drop it back to 12. **update** Looks like 12 is the limit. It was worth a shot ;)

It was fun comparing the old maps with their remakes for HL2:DM.
Shotgun spawn has been re-enabled on Shotgun Madness.

All source servers were updated and restarted after last night's STEAM update. 2/3/05
