New SunLit Vent Server Posted By Pvt_John -
The SunLit Vent server info has changed again. Yes, AGAIN. Stop whining, suffering's good for you.

Password is same as before. If you don't have it, or otherwise need help getting Vent to work, see the Vent Help page.

The new server info is below. The reason we are changing again is because I was unable to get the "SunVent" status box script, which is run on our webserver, to communicate properly and consistently with the the Vent server, which was on the game server machine.

So I got a Linux version of the Vent voice server program and put it on the webserver. Having both the Vent status script and the actual Vent server on the same machine will hopefully alleviate the problem with the status box on the website. Keep your fingers crossed :)

New Server Info
Server Name: SunVent
IP Address : vent.sunlitgames.net
Port Number: 3784
Password : same as before

The mission has 4 levels, each progressively harder than the last.
Its a scant 12.5 MB download, available from HL2 Files. Registration is required for download.

Shotgun Madness Map Cycle Posted By RosietheRiveter -
Well blame it on Heatsink ;)
Cant help but get a silly grin on my face whenever I recall watching a certain robot with jump pack flying around a map. Shotgun Madness has a new mapcycle made of maps not requiring a *.res file for autodownlaod.

SunLit DoD Map Pack #20 Posted By Pvt_John -
New maps for DoD 1.x are drying up, but I managed to find us some more new ones worth playing. Well, at least they're new to us.

You can see a complete list of all the maps, pictures, individual downloads, and the entire map pack on the DoD Map Pack #20 download page.

The big news is that we are the first to have the latest revision of dod_zafod2, called dod_zafod2_b5 (pictured at right). The author, Martee, has been playing at SunLit recently and took some of the suggestions from a recent game and has come up with this new version. It looks very nice, I can't wait to see how it plays.

A couple of the new maps are very nice looking conversions from CS maps. These include de_corruption_cz and dod_cs_assault. de_corruption_cz is absolutely gorgeous. Now if we could only teach these CS mappers proper naming conventions for DoD :)

One of the main reasons there have been enough good maps to warrant making the most recent two map packs is that the guys over at JustFunGaming.com have been amazingly productive recently, coming up with lots of maps, some of which have been brilliant. Propaganda (author of the great map, dod_propaganda4) has come out with a new map called dod_expire. It looks excellent. Nice textures, good size, nice layout. It has all the qualities of a great map. We'll have to see how it plays.

Another guy from the same site, SuicideHero has come up with a new version of my favorite map (dod_tact_v4) from the previous map pack. The new version is dod_tact_v5. He's fixed spawn camping issues on the Axis side. SuicideHero has also produced a fun looking map, called dod_paintball_b3, that's included in this pack.

We've also got a completely new map called dod_strom_b1. It's small, laid out somewhat like Flash, and looks very polished.

Thirteen new maps in all. Avoid the rush, download now!

Happy Fragging!

DOD Map - Zafod2_b4 Posted By RosietheRiveter -
Just in time for SLDL 6 is a new version of Zafod, dod_zafod2_b4
Still dark, dreary, with the two man cap on the bridge but there have been enough changes in the layout that it plays like an entirely new map.
Sandbags on the bridge, tunnels in the water and low buildings with windows allow for more avenues of advance and areas of defense.
Zafod2_b4 is loaded up on Futurama and the Annex and will auto download for you. Lets give it a work out. :)

SunLit Battlefield2 Server Ready for Action Posted By Pvt_John -
SunLit now has a Battlefield 2 server up and running.

Here is the info:
Server name: SunLit BF2
Server Addr: 67.18.13.94:16567

Obviously, we are just starting out with BF2, so there will undoubtably be some bugs to iron out.

Unfortunately, if you click on the map pic for BF2 in the "Now Playing" bar at right, you will get a page showing an error. This is because the up-to-the-second live server data program we use (phpUA) does not yet support BF2. When it does, we'll upgrade and that link should work. In the meantime, at least you can see that the server is up and running, which map is on, and if there are any players, on the home page.

Please let us know if you have any suggestions to improve the new server.

Happy fragging.

  HL2DM Map dm_spookface Posted By RosietheRiveter -
AllI can say is "WOW !!"
dm_spookface is a new map by Quicksilver and it is stellar.
Rock solid 99fps, hidden passages, teleports, enough weapons and ammo for all
and as beautiful as HLDM's loml palace.
4 Stars for this beauty. Now playing on both HL2DM servers.

Webserver Follies Posted By Pvt_John -
If any of you have noticed the server acting funny recently -- like being down completely for short periods, or just laggy -- it was because our dedicated web server was hacked. It was due to some stupidity on my part.

Of course, as soon as I discovered the problem, I did the only reasonable thing (I cried). Then, when I had my senses together, I curled up in a ball and wished it all away. After trying that for a while to no avail, I called Lazarus (aka Kernel Compile, aka the founder of SunLit) who is a professional paranoid server administrator. After spending quite a few hours of his time over the last few days, we think the problem has been rooted out.

So if you see the Kernel in game, make sure and say thanks :)

Now that it is safe, I can come out from under the bed and begin breaking things on the server again.

Game Server Crash Posted By Pvt_John -
The main game server seems to have crashed. I have issued a trouble ticket to have it manually rebooted.

UPDATE: 8:39AM
It seems to be back up now. I'm going to take the game server instances off line for a while so I can do some maintenance.

UPDATE 10:00AM
All servers are coming back on line now.

HL2DM New Maps Posted By RosietheRiveter -
Three new maps have been added to both HL2DM servers.
dm_coldruins_b1 is a stark and cold environment with stable fps.
dm_tropic_b2 is a lush map , reminiscent of the opening scenes in FarCry. FPS aren't as level but lets see how it plays out.
dm_derelict_twilight
is dark and set in Ravenholm. Some interesting weapon placements and vertical play.
dm_carousel, dm_farpoint_b1, dm_scorpius and dm_fallout have been added to the Source of Horrors and new map cycles are running on both servers. All maps will download in game and Pvt.John is working on a Mappack 7 which will include all the new maps.

Day of Defeat Map Pack #19 Posted By Pvt_John -
The 19th SunLit DoD Map Pack is now available for download. You can find pictures and downloads for all the individual maps, as well as the entire map pack, on the DoD Map Pack #19 download page.

There are 15 new maps to explore. There are some updates to maps we already enjoy, including dod_skyline and dod_propaganda4, and also some completely new maps that look very promising. These include dod_tact_v4, dod_freeze_b5, and dod_hrun2.

I also found another version of the original map, dod_flash, called "Flash Classic", and named "dod_fc". I am hoping this version has the problem with the Axis spawn door fixed. Come play it and help test :)

The flow of new maps for the current version of DoD has really dried up. Most of my favorite sites for new maps haven't had a new map posted for months, whereas they used to have a new one about once a week. I think the map developers, like everyone else, are waiting with bated breath for DoD:Source.

Happy Fragging!

Changes to Now Playing Box Posted By Pvt_John -
You might notice that the "Now Playing" box at right is loading a bit slower. But it does work again.

We were previously using a utility called Qstat to cache the live server data every minute, so that when you viewed the SunLit home page, the data was loaded from the cache very quickly. Then when you click on a server thumbnail, you would see live, up-to-the-second server information (e.g., who's playing) courtesy of another program called phpUA.

Both Qstat and phpUA stopped working on the HL1-based servers after the HLDS update on June 7th. Even with the "sv_enableoldqueries 1" option, neither program was able to get the live server data.

Late last night, the phpUA development team issued a "hot fix" for phpUA. I'm not sure what's going on with Qstat, they may be coming out with a fix soon.

I could kill Valve. I have spent two days ripping my hair out trying to get that "sv_enableoldqueries" thing to work, but it doesn't work. And of course no helpful forum posts or announcements on the Steampowered.com site, either.

Oh well. It's fixed for now. As I said, the home page will load a bit slower because phpUA queries each and every server every time you load the home page -- and so tha page isn't displayed until after all servers have responded. The effect is especially noticeable (and annoying) on Internet Explorer. If you haven't already, now's a good time to check out Mozilla's Firefox web browser, which renders the rest of the page first, then loads the lagging phpUA data as it comes in.

I'll update Qstat as soon as there's a patch available and I can figure out how to install it.

UPDATE 6:30pm CST:
Got a patch for Qstat and now everything is back to normal.

DOD Servers Are Running Posted By RosietheRiveter -
Valve has released a Half-Life Engine update.
The DOD, Shotgun Madness and HLRally servers have been updated but the update has made them "invisible" to the Now Playing Plug-In on the right.
Third party server browsers may also glitched.
Hop on in to the SunLit servers regardless. They are running :)

7 New HL2DM Maps Posted By RosietheRiveter -
Try out 7 new HL2DM maps on the Source of Madness 69.56.242.81:27055 server.
The maps are dm_carousel, dm_farpoint_b1, dm_scorpius_b1 dm_fallout, dm_groupfour and dm_hydro_b2 and dm_departure
The server is set to 10 players max and teamdeathmatch disabled while testing these maps.
If they are fun and with stable fps, we'll add them to the Source of Horrors server at 12 players.
Let us know your verdict on the new maps in the forums.

Interesting Times? Posted By RosietheRiveter -
Last night's pings were "interesting". Updated all the servers this morning, stopped the HLTV on DOD servers.
Reduced the number of player slots to 11 + 1 reserved on the Source of Horrors and 10 +1 on Source of Madness
Lets see if that helps any for this holiday monday. We may just have to run some maintenance to tune things up.

New Stock HL2DM Map - dm_runoff Posted By RosietheRiveter -
Right on time Valve has released a new stock map dm_runoff
It is based on the standard HLDM crossfire theme.
dm_runoff is a medium sized map and fps ranges from 70-99, that bodes well.
Its loaded up on both servers. Give it a run through and let us know what you think.
Is it better than the original or the custom dm_crossfire2_b2?

SLDL 5 - and the Winner is..... Posted By RosietheRiveter -
What a great finish to the season !!
The +|2AGE+ vs [DevilsBrigade] match was outstanding.
The Devils won the first round by a scant 16 points. RAGE pulled out all the stops in the second half,
keeping up the pressure, literally until the last second, for a win by 8 points.
The final outcome was DevilsBrgade over +|2AGE+ by 8 points total.
Congratulations to both teams on an excellent game.

We'd like to thank all the participating teams for a challenging season.
We hope that you had a good time.

HL2DM Maps Posted By RosietheRiveter -
Valve promises a new map release tomorrow.
"We'll be releasing a new Half-Life 2: Deathmatch map this coming Monday the 25th.
This new Valve created map is called dm_runoff and was inspired by a Half-Life 1 favorite, Crossfire."

It will be interesting to see Valve's interpretation of Crossfire compared to the community made existing versions.

The new stock map, dm_underpass has been removed from both servers' map cycles. It randomly crashes the servers and results in lag for the remaining running instances. Hopefully Valve can repair this problem with an upcoming patch.

It is made up mostly of custom maps, with a standard map coming up every second map or so in order to attract new players to SunLit.

DM Mayan Sanctuary
by Sanctuary U.K.
[S-UK] Electric Warrior & [S-UK] Captain Hornet

Its big , its beautiful and had a rock solid 99 fps over the entire map.
Uploaded it to the Source of Horrors 69.56.242.82:27055 for a test drive.
Heres hoping that it will be one of those gems that will allow 14 - 16 players.
More screenshots can be viewed here at the bottom of the mappers' page.
